2022 Toyota 86 Release Date Canada – The second-generation Toyota 86 is slated for model year 2022, and while it will be brand new, it is expected to follow the same rear-wheel drive formula as the first-generation car. Redeveloped in conjunction with the Subaru BRZ, the 2022 86 will be powered by a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine and, hopefully, a standard six-speed manual transmission. We also expect Toyota to address our main complaint with the latest generation and give 86 more horsepower by 2022. We think a turbocharged engine would suit the attitude of this affordable sports car, right?
2022 Toyota 86 Release Date Canada
The current Toyota 86 is old in automotive years. Despite a host of updates, the 86 has largely remained the same since it arrived for the 2013 model year as the Scion FR-S. With the recent debut of its mechanical twin, the 2022 Subaru BRZ, we have a better idea of what to expect from the Toyota sports coupe as it prepares to enter its second generation and probably adds the initials GR to its name. The most exciting thing to expect from the 2022 Toyota GR 86? More power.
2022 Toyota GR 86: Engine and Transmission Options
Toyota has not announced specifications for the new GR 86. But we are fairly confident that it will continue to share its engine and transmission options with the BRZ.
That means we can expect a new 2.4-liter four-deck engine under the hood. The mill should pump out 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is a 23 hp and 28 lb-ft increase over the more powerful 2020 Toyota 86. The outgoing 86 relied on a 2.0-liter flat-four to make 205 hp. and 156 lb.-ft. of torque when equipped with a manual transmission. Models with the automatic were detuned to 200 HP and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2022 Toyota GR 86 should continue to offer the option of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
2022 Toyota GR 86: Suspension Upgrades
The new Toyota GR 86 must continue to share its chassis with the BRZ. This should translate to the GR 86 gaining more stiffness for even better control. While we can once again expect some slight suspension tuning differences between the BRZ and GR 86, we’re almost certain that these two models will ultimately drive quite similar.
What’s new in 2022?
After skipping the 2021 model year, the Toyota 86 is expected to launch as a 2022 model after a complete redesign.
Prices and which one to buy
Toyota hasn’t said anything about pricing or features, but we expect a GT model to offer more creature comforts than the base 86. We’ll update this story with more details as we learn about them.
Engine, transmission and performance
The first generation 86 came with a Subaru-supplied, naturally-aspirated four-cylinder. Acceleration was decently fast, but the engine lacked refinement. For 2022, we expect a turbocharged flat-four like the one found in the Subaru Ascent SUV. That 260 hp mill would make the 86 even faster. Hopefully a six-speed manual will continue to serve as the standard 86 transmission, and we anticipate Toyota will also offer a six- or eight-speed automatic.
Real world fuel economy and MPG
The 2022 86 has not received EPA fuel economy estimates, but the last generation earned ratings of 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined when equipped with the six-speed automatic. The manual model doesn’t work nearly as well. When we have the opportunity to put the new model through our 200 highway mile fuel economy test, we will update this story with results.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
From spy photos, we can see that the 2022 86 will retain its relative size and shape. The 86 and the Subaru BRZ are unique in the affordable sports car market as the only two that offer seating for four. Not that the rear seats are all that comfortable or spacious, but they are nice to have.
Infotainment and Connectivity
We really expect Toyota to make big improvements to the infotainment system by 2022. The next-gen model offered a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces, but its software was not particularly intuitive and the whole system seemed pretty basic. We’re pretty sure Toyota will provide a bigger screen this time around, as well as additional features and conveniences like a wireless charging pad for smartphones and onboard Wi-Fi.
Driver assistance and safety features
Crash test results are not available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 86 outgoing offered little in the way of driver-assist features, but we expect Toyota to provide its suite of safety technologies as standard equipment on the 2022 model.
Warranty and maintenance coverage
We see no reason why Toyota would change the standard warranty package from the 86 to the 2020 model. Toyota’s two-year courtesy maintenance policy is a nice bonus that the BRZ doesn’t match.
2022 Toyota GR 86: Exterior and Interior Styling
The current 86 features a low-key yet sporty design that fits an entry-level sports coupe. While the style will certainly evolve, it will continue with a less-is-more theme so as not to outshine the Supra. The front and rear fascias will likely get cues from the current Toyota design language. Expect interior improvements as well. The new BRZ features an updated center console layout, a 7.0-inch digital meter cluster, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, all of which should carry over to the 86.
2022 Toyota GR 86: Pricing and Release Date
Pricing is anyone’s guess at this point, but we have some ideas of what they might look like. Traditionally, the 86 has carried a lower starting price than the BRZ, so this is likely to continue. Since the new BRZ adds a lower trim to its lineup, the GR 86 might as well. Such a model will probably start a thousand dollars more or less than the cheapest BRZ. For reference, the 2020 Toyota 86 starts at $ 28,055, while the 2020 BRZ is priced at $ 29,745. The 2022 Toyota GR 86 should arrive sometime next year.
